Today, we spent the morning looking for apps that we could use for reluctant readers. I walked away from this class feeling like I really learned a lot! Like I said before, I don’t own an iPhone or iPod Touch, so this was a completely new experience for me.
Before starting this class, I had no idea how to search for or download apps. I didn’t realize how simple the process was! As we were looking for reading apps today, I found myself thinking of my Resource students that I work with on phonics skills and I tried to find fun games that I could use with them. There were many to choose from!
In the other course I am taking, I am doing a presentation on Autism that will include strategies for working with these students. I searched for apps on this topic and saw some amazing resources that I will definitely be sharing with my colleagues. I can’t believe how many great apps exist, the possibilities are endless! I really like how specific you can get with your wording when you are searching for a topic because it narrows down the time you have to spend looking.
I love how engaging and interactive these apps can be - the bright colors, visual cues and great auditory articulation grabs the child’s attention and pulls them in without them even realizing that they are learning. Technology has come very far since I was a young child!
I think this was a great activity because with everyone posting their apps to their blogs, we will have a wealth of resources to try out. I was feeling a little nervous going into it because I really had no idea what I was doing, but it didn’t take too long to get the hang of it! I know now, without a doubt, that I will be getting an iPhone in the very near future!
